May Day

Origin, History, and Significance of May Day

May Day started as a protest to labour class employees' unjust working conditions during the 19th century. The labour union back then organized a protest movement after garnering the strength and resources. During the 1880s, industrial plants' employers and owners would force workers to work under harsh and extreme conditions. The usual workday would last for anywhere between 10 to 16 hours, and as such, death and permanent injuries became common.

When labourers realized this unjust treatment could not go on and that their lives were being exchanged for profit, they organized a protest that demanded employers reduce working hours to 8 hours a day and improve their working conditions. Socialism was a relatively new concept during that era, which is one reason the movement became successful.

There is a May Day tradition in many Western countries where children leave a delightful basket of flowers and sweets anonymously at people's doorsteps on May 1st. It's often referred to as International Workers Day. According to its history, May Day celebrations vary greatly depending on where it is celebrated and numerous festivities are involved.

The Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Unions held a convention in Chicago in 1884 where they proclaimed that eight hours would be the legal working hours for employees from May 1st, 1886. And this is how May Day came to be. In India, May Day was first celebrated on May 1st, 1923, by the Kisan Party of Hindustan. A red flag was used during this celebration, and this flag is now synonymous with May Day celebrations in India.

When is May Day Celebrated?

May Day is celebrated on May 1st of every year in India and the world. It is an international holiday popular across the People's Republic of China, Cuba, North Korea, and Russia. Officially, it is celebrated in over 66 countries, but there are parts of the world where it is unofficially celebrated as well. For example, May Day celebrations in England involve having a young woman parade through town as the 'May Queen.'

In India, May Day is also fondly referred to as 'Maharashtra Day' or 'Gujarat Day.' Out of respect for the labour workforce, the day is dedicated to uniting workers for their social and economic advancement. In Hindi, May Day stands for Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas, while May Day is called Kamgar Divas in Marathi and Uzhaipalar Naal in Tamil.
