Ganesh Chaturthi 2021
Also known as Vinayaka Chavithi or Vinayaka Chathurthi, the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to welcome the Elephant-headed God Ganesh from his home at Kailash Parbat to Earth. He does not make his journey to Earth alone but comes along with his mother, Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that Lord Ganesha was born on this day, and hence to celebrate his birth, people celebrate Vinayaka Chaturthi.
The festival is celebrated for ten days. However, in most households, Ganesh puja is observed only on the day of Chaturthi, after which the idol is immersed. However, in big pandals, the idol is immersed only on the tenth day.
The Ganesh Chaturthi celebration starts a day earlier with people buying Ganesh idols made of clay. The bringing of Lord Ganesha happens with a lot of fanfare. People shout out in excitement, Ganesh Puja, dance, and sing as they bring the idol of Lord Ganesha.
In every area, there are pandals constructed to keep the idol of Ganesha. Along with the pandals, the surrounding areas and roads are all well-lit and decorated with colorful lights. The idol of Ganesha is adorned with beautiful clothes and jewelry. Even at home, devotees decorate their houses with colorful flowers and rangoli during Chaturthi before perfroming Ganesh Puja.
Happy Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration
Devotees wait for this celebration all year long with bated breath. Ganesh Chaturthi 2021 is on the 10th of September. The Madhyanya Ganesh puja starts from 11:02 AM and ends at 1:42 PM. As the legend goes, the sight of the moon should be avoided between 9:07 AM to 9:26 PM on the day of the Ganesh Chaturthi 2021. Most households keep Ganpati Bappa in their home only for a day, after which they immerse the idol. However, for the community puja celebrations, the date of Ganpati 2021 visarjan is on the 19th of September, 2021. People avoid going out of their house on this day since the roads are jam-packed. Especially for tourists visiting Mumbai for Ganesh Chaturthi 2021, it is advisable to avoid the roads or the Girgaon Chowpatti Beach and Juhu Beach on this day, where the idol immersion takes place.
The best way to have a happy Ganesh Chaturthi is to celebrate it with your family and loved ones. People on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi visit the homes of their relatives and friends with sweets, and Ganesh Chaturthi wishes for abundance, happiness, and good health.
The most important element for a happy Ganesh Chaturthi celebration is food. Although the food eaten on this day is purely satvik, people do not keep themselves from feasting on tasty food. In a Maharashtrian household, apart from the Prasad, friends, and relatives are served Chawli Usal, Sabudana Vada, Kothambir Vadi, and sweet dishes like Shrikhand, Karanji, Puran Poli, Modak and Patholi. Gifts are also exchanged among friends and family, along with Ganesh Chaturthi’s wishes.
Visitors who wish to visit their friends or dear ones for the first time during the Ganesh Chaturthi 2021 celebration would do well to take some gifts along. It would be a great way to celebrate this special day of Chaturthi by wearing traditional clothes and visiting Ganpati temples and the puja pandals.
Mumbai Visit during Ganesh Utsav 2021
Ganpati festival is celebrated all over India, especially in parts of Southern India and Western India. However, Mumbai is the best place to visit if you wish to experience this festival in its true fervor. There are several MSRTC buses that offer affordable travel to festival venues. During the Ganpati festival, each and every nook and corner of the city are adorned with festive lights. Every area, colony, and society has its own Ganpati pandals. People throng in groups to the Ganpati pandals to have a look at the idols. There is a fair-like ambiance in the city for the entire 10-day period.
If you are in Mumbai during this time of the year, make sure to visit the Siddhi Vinayaka temple, where it is believed that every prayer gets answered, and all your wishes get fulfilled just by whispering it into Lord Ganesh’s “vahaan” (carrier)the mouse’ ear.
The two other must-go-to places in Mumbai during this time are the Lal Baug Cha Raja and Andheri Cha Raja.
- The Lal Baug Cha Raja is an eight-decade old community Ganpati puja and is said to be a “navsacha Ganpati” which means “one who is a fulfiller of wish”. The Ganpati idol is also famous for its height as it stands about 18-20 feet tall.
- The Andheri Cha Raja is also a five-decade-old Ganpati held in the upmarket area of Andheri (West) in Mumbai. Like the Lal Baug Cha Raja, this Ganpati is also believed to fulfill every devotee’s wish. Another interesting fact about this Ganpati is that it is immersed after 16 days, unlike other idols that are immersed on the 10th day.
