Erode, the administrative headquarters of Erode District is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. It was previously part of the Coimbatore district but in 1979 it became a separate district. This city is located on the banks of River Kaveri. It is about 400 kilometers away from state capital Chennai and about 80 kilometers from Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu’s historical enrichment is perhaps conserved in Mayiladuthurai, located in Nagapattinam District. The antique temple constructions of this place have been existence from the times of Medieval Cholas. The place is named after the Mayil or a peacock form of Lord Shiva who was worshipped by Goddess Parvathi in this location. The previous name of this place was Mayuram, meaning “peacock town”. It has been changed to Mayiladuthurai by Mayuram Municipality. It is located 281 kms away from Chennai.
