Ganesh Chaturthi History
Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated with lots of joy, love, and enthusiasm. Celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, it is popular in almost all Indian states, including Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, and more. Ganesha is also popularly called as Ekdanta, Gajanan, Vakrtunda, Dhoomraketu, Siddhi Vinayak, and has several other names. He is believed to be the god of fortune, prosperity, and wisdom. Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Ganesh Utsav or Vinayak Chaturthi, is overall a 10-day celebration.
Like every other year, Ganpati Chaturthi 2025 is again expected to be celebrated with great grandeur. The festival has its roots dating back to the 17th century. During the Maratha Period, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj promoted Ganpati pooja to foster national unity and unity among people. Later again, Lokmanya Tilak, during the British period, popularised the Ganpati festival to encourage patriotism among fellow Indians.
Cultural significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
The cultural significance of the Ganesh puja can be traced back to several Hindu mythologies. According to Legend, Lord Ganesha was made out of the turmeric paste that Goddess Parvati used for her body and gave Ganesha a living form. She then ordered him to guard her room while she bathed. However, a conflict between Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva arose when the latter was denied entry to the chamber. In anger, Shiva severed Ganesha’s head. This angered Maa Parvati, leading Lord Shiva to revive Ganesha by replacing his head with an elephant's head. He also gave Ganesha the vardaan of being the first deity to be worshipped.
