On the sixth day of the bright half of the Tamil month of Aippasi falls the Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham (October-November). Dedicated to Lord Murugan, Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham is 48 days long. Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham 2025 started on 10th September 2025. The 6-day Vratham will be observed from 22nd October to 27th October 2025. Murugan bhakts will witness Soorasamharam on 27th October 2025.

According to the mythology, the Maha Skanda Sashti festival is highly auspicious because this is when Lord Murugan marked victory over the demon Surapadman and his brothers. The final day, when the demon was slain, is Soorasamharam and the victory of good over evil. Fasting, rituals, praying, and chanting are considered core parts of Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham.

• Head Bath

Some devotees of Lord Murugan also wear a rudraksha mala on the commemoration of the festival. Not everyone wears it, though. 

• Daily Prayers

Devotees offer prayers and chantings daily. They may listen to or recite Kanda Sashti Kavasam, Thiruppugazh, or Vel Maaral. They also regularly chant “Om Saravanabhava” and the Gayatri mantra.

• Discipline in Eating

Throughout the 48 days of dedication to Lord Murugan, it is crucial to stay vegetarian. Eating non-vegetarian food is prohibited and discouraged during rituals. Some people eat only one meal a day, the one offered to Lord Murugan.
