On the sixth day of the bright half of the Tamil month of Aippasi falls the Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham (October-November). Dedicated to Lord Murugan, Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham is 48 days long. According to the mythology, the Maha Skanda Sashti festival is highly auspicious because this is when Lord Murugan marked victory over the demon Surapadman and his brothers. The final day, when the demon was slain, is Soorasamharam and the victory of good over evil. Fasting, rituals, praying, and chanting are considered core parts of Maha Skandha Sashti Vratham.
