Booking Platform Ticket Online

Buying a platform ticket is important if you’re entering a railway station in India for purposes other than travelling.

Earlier, booking platform tickets meant long queues at the counter. Today, this has been replaced by an easy online railway ticket-booking app that makes the whole process digital.

This guide explains how to book a railway platform ticket online, along with pricing, rules, and other important details you should know before entering the station.

What is a Platform Ticket?

A platform ticket allows you to enter a railway platform even if you are not travelling by train. It is meant for visitors who need access to the platform for a short time.

A platform ticket:

  • Allows you to access the platform for a limited duration (2 hours).
  • Is required at most major railway stations for non-passengers.
  • Does not allow you to travel on a train.

The price of a platform ticket is ₹10, and it remains valid for up to 2 hours from the time of booking.

Who Needs a Platform Ticket at Indian Railway Stations?

A platform ticket is required for anyone entering an Indian railway platform without a valid train ticket. It is meant for visitors who are not travelling but need access to the platform.

So, you will need a platform ticket if you are:

  • Accompanying someone to board a train
  • Receiving passengers at the railway platform
  • Helping travelling family members, like elderly parents or children, board the train safely

You will not need to buy a platform ticket online if:

  • You already have a valid train ticket
  • You are staying outside the platform area

How to Buy a Platform Ticket Online?

You can now conveniently book a railway platform ticket online using the RailOne App. Launched by Indian Railways in collaboration with IRCTC and CRIS, RailOne brings multiple services like ticket booking, train tracking, food ordering, and platform ticket booking together in one place for a smoother experience.

Here’s how to book a platform ticket online through the RailOne App:

  • Step 1: Download and open the RailOne App on your smartphone.
  • Step 2: Register using your mobile number/IRCTC/UTS credentials if you’re a new user. If you already have an account, log in using your mPIN.
  • Step 3: Go to the ‘Platform’ option under the ‘Journey Planner’ section.
  • Step 4: Allow location access to continue.
  • Step 5: Select whether you are ‘At Station’ or ‘Outside Station’.
  • Step 6: If booking ‘Outside Station’, choose the railway station and enter the number of people.
  • Step 7: Click on ‘Pay’ and complete the payment using R-Wallet, UPI, or other digital payment modes.

Once your booking is complete, you can view your platform ticket in the ‘My Bookings’ section of the RailOne App.

How to Buy a Platform Ticket Offline?

Passengers can also buy platform tickets offline at the railway station. There are two ways to buy platform tickets offline:

1. At the Ticket Counter

  • Visit the ticket counter at the railway station
  • Ask for a platform ticket
  • Pay the required amount in cash or digital mode
  • Collect your printed platform ticket

2. Through Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs)

  • Locate an ATVM at the railway station
  • Select the ‘Platform Ticket’ option on the screen
  • Choose the number of tickets required
  • Make the payment using a smart card or UPI QR code
  • Collect the printed ticket from the machine

Paperless vs Paper Ticket – Which Should You Choose?

When you book railway platform tickets online, you get the ticket in a paperless, digital format. Alternatively, when you book offline, you receive physical, printed copies.

So which is better? Here’s an easy comparison to help you decide:

Type Pros Cons
Paperless Ticket (Digital)
  • No queues
  • Quick booking
  • No risk of misplacing the ticket
  • More eco-friendly friend
  • Requires a smartphone
  • Battery needed to show the ticket
  • Location access is needed to book platform tickets
Paper Ticket (Printed)
  • No dependency on your phone
  • Good for times when you are booking for elders or people who are not very tech-savvy
  • There is a risk of losing the platform ticket
  • May involve waiting in long lines at the counter

So, objectively, booking railway platform tickets online is better. It is quick, convenient, and can be done from the comfort of your home. However, if you’re booking for someone who cannot use smartphones well or may not be able to show the ticket on the phone, offline and paper tickets are a better choice.

What is the R-Wallet and Why Should You Use It?

When you book a platform ticket online, you may see an option called R-Wallet. It is a prepaid digital wallet available within the RailOne app that lets you make quick, cashless payments for platform tickets, train tickets, and other railway services. Once you register on the app, the R-Wallet is available for use.

Benefits of using R-Wallet:

  • Faster and smoother payments without entering details each time
  • Bonus credits are provided on recharges sometimes
  • Minimum recharge starts at ₹100, with further top-ups in multiples of ₹100
  • Can be recharged easily through the RailOne App or at station counters

If you frequently book platform tickets or use railway services, R-Wallet can save time and make the booking process more convenient.
