Katra temple darshan

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Darshan by Pony

Situated at an altitude of 5200 feet, the trek is nearly 12 kms from the base camp at Katra.

The revelation of the Mother Goddess in the Holy Cave is in a natural rock form which is one at the base but has three heads at the top. These three heads in a natural rock form are known as the Holy Pindies. The uniqueness of the Holy Pindies is that although they emanate from one single rock form, each one is distinctly different from the other two in colour and texture. The climb is on a well-paved path with a gentle slope. Its duration varies according to the weather, the crowds and your speed.

Walking for 12-13 Kms can be arduous and tiring for those not used to it or otherwise not fit to walk for long. Many devotees have breathing problems or some other ailments or are old or physically challenged. All or some of them may need the services of Ponies ( Small Horse) and palanquins.

Key landmarks include Darshani Deodhi, Banganga, Chara Paduka, Indraprastha, Adhkuari, Garbha Joon, Himkoti, Haathi Matha, Sanji Chhat Bhavan, Sher ka Panja and Bhairon Mandir.

Once you reach the shrine, wait for your turn - the waiting period is much longer during the peak season. Yatra registration slip decides your entry into the inner sanctum.

ABOUT Katra TEMPLE

Devi Mahalakshmi , the hindu goddess of wealth who is worshipped by one and all presents herself in a very unique form in the blessed temple at Katra , Jammu & Kashmir . By Popular legend, one has to get the call or beckoning from the goddess to visit her in this temple and no one else gets the chance to visit the temple. A pilgrimage to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is considered to be one of the purest pilgrimages of our times as it enables one to experience peace amidst beauty - though beauty is seen as a distraction one attains a peace of mind after taking the darshan of this goddess. The goddess is worshipped as a divine mother who fulfils whatever her children wish for and not just as a goddess and hence the connection with the devotees is instant. The Goddess resides in a Holy Cave located in the folds of a three peaked mountain named Trikuta and there is an interesting story behind its origin. To cut a long story short, the Tri devis – Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswathy blended their powers into the female form of Vaishnavi who took birth in a human family of Ratnakar to help mankind. The story, the environment, the experience together attracts millions of devotees every year and the figures are staggering. The Holy Cave of the Mother is situated at a height of 5000+ ft form ground. The Yatris or the devotees who undertake the yatra (journey) have to undergo a trek of nearly 12 kms from the base camp at Katra. After an interesting journey upto the main temple, the devotees are blessed with the darshan of the Mother Goddess inside the Sanctum Sanctorum (garba graha)- the Holy Cave. There is no typical idol or statue of a female deity - rather she is worshipped in the shape of three natural rock formations called the Pindies. The devotees can count on the darshans round the clock throughout the year. It is an undeniable statement when we say the experience of a devotee from their ‘call’ of darshan, through the intense journey and finally to the holy cave is worth a lifetime and quenches the desires of the mind and soul. Upon receiving the invitation from the Goddess, one needs to just take one step towards taking her darshan and the rest will fall in place by her blessings.
