Palani is a small pilgrimage town situated in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Palani is famous because of the presence of the world famous hill temple dedicated to Lord Murugan also known as Kartikeya or Subramanian. The temple is situated at an elevation of 1500 feet on Sivagiri hills and commands a splendid view of the nearby hills including the Kodaikanal Hills. The architecture of the temple includes a gold tower. Pilgrims can either climb the steps that are sculpted into the rocks or take a wider path meant for the ascent of elephants. In addition, a cable winch with three tracks and a rope way have also been provided more recently for the comfort of the pilgrims. The town has a few other temples which are worth visiting. Kovilpatti, also called Covilpatti, is a municipality in Thoothukudi District in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the second largest town in Thoothukudi District. Kovilpatti is located 100 km south of Madurai city, 55 km north of Tirunelveli Town and 60 km north-west of Tuticorin. It is situated on the National Highway 7, which connects Varanasi in the north to Kanyakumari in the south. Kovilpatti town lies at about 130 m above mean sea level and is one of the industrial cities of Tamil Nadu. The town is famous for match factories, textile mills and fireworks industries among others. Famous tourist spots include Kathiresan temple (built on a hill Kathiresan hills), Ettayapuram (the birthplace of Nationalist poet and freedom fighter, Bharathi), Jamin palace, the Manimandapam of Bharathiyar, the birth house of Bharathiyar, the memorial of Sri Muthusamy Deekshidar, Kalugumalai (a massive rock dome of 300 ft), and Vettuvankoil among others.
