Madgaon is the capital of Salcete region in Goa. Locally known as Margao, Madgaon is situated along the coast. One of the oldest towns in Goa, Madgaon is located on the banks of the Sal River. Before the Portuguese invasion, Madgaon was home to numerous temples and Hindu Mathas belonging to the Vaishnava sects and was known as Mathagram.
