Tirunelveli, which is also known as Nellai is a famous city in Tamil Nadu. This city was named Tinnevelly by the British. Located at a distance of about 700 km to the south of Chennai, Tirunelveli is said to be one of the earliest settlements in the state. Placed along the western bank of River Thamirabarani, Tirunelveli has a twin city called Palayamkottai, which is located on the eastern bank of the river. The city was ruled by various dynasties and the Pandyas were the main rulers. The Polygar war between Palaiyakkarars led by Veerapandiya Kattabomman and the British army was fought within the borders of this city. An industrial town in modern times, there is no dearth of historical monuments in Tirunelveli. The Nellaiappar Temple is one of the most prominent attractions here. Being an prominent educational hub of South India, Tirunelveli enjoys good connectivity with other towns and cities nearby.
