Wardha was founded in 1866, and it has developed into an important centre for the cotton trade. Wardha played an important role during the Indian Independence struggle. Being a sister city for Sevagram, Wardha was a major center for the Indian Independence Movement. It came into limelight when it became the headquarters for an annual meet of the Indian National Congress in 1934, and then, for housing Mahatma Gandhi's Ashram. Thepresent Wardha district was part of Nagpur until 1862. In 1866, the district headquarters was moved to Palakwadi village. When the huts in the village were destroyed, a new city was constructed by the English town-planners. This new city was called Wardha. Acharya Vinoba Bhave lived near Wardha.
