The city was a well-known centre of trade and the famed silk and spice trade was carried through here during the monsoon winds in particular. As such, it became a key place for the land-sea trade routes. Even the Arab traders entered Gujarat through Bharuch to do business. The British also established their business centers there. The 132-year-old Golden Bridge across the Narmada connects Bharuch with Ankleshwar on the station front while a newer bridge connects it to the highway.
