About Dindigul

Dindigul, located in the state of Tamil Nadu, lies between the famous Palani and Sirumalai Hills. The city gets its name from a huge rock that overlooks the city and which resembles a pillow. This place was under the reign of Tipu Sultan for a long time and was later conquered by the British. Dindigul fort, built by Muthu Krishna Naicker in the 17th century, is one of the main attractions here. The site is currently maintained by the ASI. Kamarajar Lake, Berijam Lake, Kutladampatti Waterfalls and Ayyampalayam are few other beautiful places nearby. Known also as an important religious centre, some of the prominent temples are Kasi Visalakshi-Viswanathar Temple, Sri Kottai Mariamman Temple, Kamakshiamman Temple, Anjaneyar Temple, Sendraya Perumal Temple, Kurinji Andavar Temple, and Nadupatti Anjaneyar Temple. The Roman Catholic Church and the Begambur Big Mosque, both believed to be 300 years old, are other religious places here. Dindigul is accessible by a good road and rail network.
