The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) began an indefinite strike on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, bringing bus transport to a standstill across Telangana state. More than 6,000 buses are at a halt, affecting over 60 lakh daily commuters.
According to TGSRTC employees, the strike notice was issued on March 13, but it received no response from either the government or the RTC administration.
Why is TGSRTC on Strike?
The TGSRTC employee union, Joint Action Committee (JAC), announced an indefinite strike after the government failed to fulfil employees’ demands. Despite multiple rounds of negotiations, the union’s demands remain unresolved.
TGSRTC key demands include:
- The merging of TGSRTC with the state government
- Pay revision and better pension benefits
- The clearing of pending dues of the Provident Fund and Dearness Allowance
- Job security as it was promised by the government during the election
- Regular labour union elections
Employees stated that the 32 demands they raised are crucial to their financial stability and to better working conditions. The government has mentioned that while some demands are under review, key demands are being examined by the committee.
Who is Affected by the TGSRTC Shutdown?
Primarily, daily commuters and those who rely on TGSRTC for bus services have been affected. 60+ lakh passengers are likely to face travel disruptions since bus services have been halted in Telangana. The majorly affected groups are:
- Office-goers and students, who are daily commuters
- Daily wage workers who relied on TGSRTC for affordable transportation
- Women commuters, as they heavily depend on TGSRTC
This strike has clearly shown how important TGSRTC bus services are to the people of Telangana, and a major strike like this can significantly affect travel.
Routes Most Impacted
The strike is in effect across the state of Telangana. Thus, both urban and rural bus routes have been affected. Major areas facing disruption are:
- Intercity bus routes and district routes that connect towns and villages
- Urban corridors in Hyderabad and neighbouring regions
- Rural bus routes where buses are the most affordable mode of transportation
Remote areas are the most affected since alternative travel options are limited.
Alternative Travel Options via redBus
Since TGSRTC went on strike, private transportation has seen a clear surge in demand. If you are also experiencing travel disruptions due to the strike, redBus can be of great help.
Here are the alternative travel options via redBus:
- Private bus operators on multiple routes
- Intercity travel services offered by state buses and private operators
However, availability is limited, and prices may be higher due to increased demand.
Travel Tips During the Strike
Below we have shared some tips to help commuters travelling during an ongoing strike of public transport, like the one in Telangana:
- Plan in Advance:
Try to avoid last-minute booking and plan in advance. Check for alternative routes and book tickets in advance if possible.
- Choose Shared Rides
Carpooling and shared rides can be quite helpful in such situations. Shared rides are also more affordable than individual transport.
- Maintain Buffer Time
Delays in departures and arrivals are common during strikes. To avoid getting late, try to start your journey early and have enough buffer time.
- Follow Local News
Stay updated on the latest local news every day to know what’s happening around. It helps you to make informed decisions.
- Choose Work From Home
If you rely on public transport, try to avoid commuting whenever possible. Working from home can be a smart and feasible choice in such situations.
The strike is expected to continue until a resolution is reached, making it crucial for commuters to stay flexible in their travel plans.
