Kolkata is the capital city of West Bengal. The former capital of British India, Kolkata is home to one of the oldest ports in the country. Kolkata has an old world charm that is reflected in its old Victorian era buildings, yellow ambassador cabs, hand pulled rickshaws and trams. Though the city has been restructured with flyovers, skyscrapers, multiplexes and business centers, Kolkata has been able to retain its essence. Victoria Memorial built in the memory of Queen Victoria is the landmark of this city. The other attractions include the Indian Museum, Marble Palace, State Archaeological Gallery, Academy of Fine Arts and Mother’s house. Kolkata has its own collection of bridges. The Rabindra Setu Bridge, popularly known as Howrah Bridge, Hooghly Bridge and Bally Bridge are a few of them. Dakshineshwar Kali temple, Kalighat temple, Tipu Sultan Mosque, and St. John’s Church are some of the popular places for worship.
Siliguri is one of the most significant towns located in the Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal. It is strategically located along the Siliguri Corridor (also known as the Chicken’s neck), which is a thin strip of land connecting the mainland India with the northeastern part of India. Siliguri is one of the major towns in that part that it is often called the commercial centre of North Bengal. Furthermore, it serves as the transit base for those who travel to the neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar among others. Siliguri is also the gateway to several other major hill stations in the Himalayan ranges like Gangtok, Mirik, Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Kurseong, to name a few. All these hills stations are accessible only through Siliguri. Siliguri is also famous for tea plantations and hence many people come here to enjoy the beauty of this town as well.
The journey was pretty rough. The bus didnt stop for dinner.
Pros: 1. Redbus portal is userfriendly 2. Helpful SMS on time 3. mTicket is useful- no searching for printers in a rush. Cons: 1. Bus was Late to start - started at 1830 (advertised 1730) 2. Bus was Late at Destn - Reached at 1800 (advertised 0800) 3. So was late by 10hrs. This totally threw off my schedule and messed up my forward journey. 4. The Staff just would not say clearly what was the expected time to reach - i could then have booked train-etickets or told my relatives to get an alternative plan 5. Finally when we reached siliguri- the entire staff- dvr, helper went off to meet some policeman they had picked an argument with. So i had to wait 15min just get someone to open the luggage door to remove my bags. 6. The Sleeper bunk is just about ok,its narrow, there is only space for 2 pers to sleep, Perhaps a womans handbag or a small camera case. No space for a Backpack or duffel bag. Unless you want to sleep with your legs folded. Suggestion: 1. If they could give the GPS loc Coordinates of the Bus location while starting it would help in quickly getting to the bus - I was roaming around esplanade with 2 roller bags looking for this bus. 2. They can break down the route timing into segments- like time to reach Malda, Islampur and so on. This would let us know. 3. Some buses give a Charging socket near the bunk- it would help. 4. It takes 30min to change a tyre - all buses should incorporate this in a 12 hr route. This should be planned.Early arr should be a bonus. 5. The Redbus portal can show all buses at a location, sorted route wise or departure time wise.- This would help to break up a journey into segments - in my case i was looking to book a bus from Siliguri to New Bongaigaon failing which any bus on that route eg to Guwahati from which i could drop off at a point.
Bus timing was written as 12 hrs journey. Finally it ended up in more than 17 hrs.behaviour of staffs were not good.bus has not given proper break to have breakfast or tea.bus was not clean also.blankets were smelling and God knows when it was last washed.there were strains of vomitting.experience was nightmare.
Service of redbus was quite good and easy to book and cancel. The service provided by the travel agency wasnt good. Bus was delayed by an hour and we were not informed at all about the delay upon asking they say its coming its coming
